Our Historical Roots

Understanding our origins is key to appreciating the Bardai Samaj’s identity.

Our ancestors, known as the Sompura Girnar-Bardai Brahmins, have resided in the Saurashtra region of Gujarat for centuries. Initially settled in Girinagar near Junagadh, they later expanded across the Barda Hills and coastal areas.

In the 16th century, the Girnar Brahmins divided into four sects, with the Bardai being one of the prominent groups. The Bardai Brahmins settled predominantly around the Barda Hills, forming close-knit communities deeply connected to their ancestral lands.

Historical texts like the Skand Purana refer to these Brahmins as Girinara Brahmins, with Girinagar being an ancient city with a storied past. This area saw various rulers and patronage, leaving behind inscriptions and records that affirm the Brahmins’ longstanding presence.

Copperplate inscriptions reveal that the Girinagar region flourished under the Vallabhi and Rashtrakuta dynasties. Merchants and rulers alike contributed to its growth, shaping a legacy that continues to influence the Bardai Brahman Samaj today.

The earliest direct records of Bardai Brahmins date back to the 10th century, with documented land grants and references in royal edicts. Over time, Bardai families migrated to nearby villages and towns, spreading their culture and traditions.

The 20th century witnessed significant migration of Bardai Brahmins from rural areas to urban centers such as Porbandar, a major city in the Barda Plains. This migration was driven by the pursuit of education, employment, and economic advancement.

From Porbandar and other parts of Gujarat, Bardai Brahmins spread across India and internationally, establishing communities in Africa, Europe, and North America.

Today, Bardai Brahman Samaj organizations exist worldwide, including active groups in the United Kingdom, where members work tirelessly to preserve their cultural heritage and support community development.
